Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy
What is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is the use of ketamine in conjunction with psychotherapy used to treat mental health conditions such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, OCD as well as chronic pain. Ketamine allows your outer protective shell to take a rest and bring down your protective walls, enabling the counselors to help you navigate these sometimes-turbulent waters.
How Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy Works
Nurse anesthesiologists along with therapists use a holistic approach to address root causes of many mental health conditions. This approach empowers clients to develop healthy coping mechanisms giving them greater control over their mental health and attaining a better quality of life.
Ketamine works by regulating or adjusting a neurotransmitter called glutamate, which is used to send signals to other cells. Low does Ketamine infusions enable new connections (synapses) to be made in the brain. Research indicates that when a counselor is used during your ketamine infusion, the treatment has a higher degree of effectiveness.
What will I feel during the KAP Session?
Because Ketamine is a dissociative medication, you will likely feel a disconnection from reality or a sense of euphoria. You will also experience drowsiness, heaviness in your limbs and a hypersensitivity to light and sound. These feelings and sensations are short-term and disappear 10-15 minutes after the session is over.
Your counsellor will help make your mind feel safe, enabling you to go to places your conscious self may find too difficult to go to. As each layer is peeled back during each of your ketamine assisted therapy sessions, the issue becomes exposed, sometimes provoking confusion and anxiety. Having a professional present is reassuring; helping you trust in the process and enabling you to work through the issues.
